About Us (and You)
Things to do in Bergen County that will help to save the world

Yes, it's possible.  Alot of damage has been done, but if we act now, individually and together, we can make sure that our children and grandchildren are able to enjoy a good life in Bergen County, and anywhere in the world.  All it takes is knowledge and action.

Luckily, if you live in Bergen County, you have a wealth of resources available that can help you reduce your carbon footprint and save the world

And if you're willing to take one more step, you can also help to change policy in the U.S.  Since the U.S. is the leading per capita carbon emitter, that would be a truly giant step forward.  Also, find out how New Jersey is becoming a leader in solving the crisis, and how you can participate.

What Bergen County residents can do.

Bergen County offers its residents many ways to reduce our carbon footprint.  Here are just a few links you can explore:
  • Recycle!  use your town's recycling for paper, plastic, and cans, but for toxics such as compact flourescent bulbs (CFLs), aerosols, tires, computers, old paint jars, bring your waste to Bergen Community College on scheduled weekends.
  • Compost!  Keep carbon in the ground where it belongs, and reduce the load of garbage while you're at it.  Your town may have a compost heap, or you can create your own and save on fertilizer for your garden.
  • Learn about and support
what your County is doing to improve the health of our environment.

And there's so much more you can do, from helping your town to plant trees, to pushing for solar panels on top of your school...  it's up to you, it's up to all of us.  Get involved!

What New Jersey residents can do
You can help New Jersey move forward to a sustainable, clean future.  Would you like your town to be a green town, like Hamilton Township in Mercer County?  Or introduce a green curriculum into your school?  Or go all the way and install solar or wind power at your home or workplace (with a generous 50% rebate)?  Take advantage of the resources available!

Three things you can do today!

  1. Replace your incandescent bulbs with compact flourescents.  Your local hardware store probably carries them, even if the supermarket doesn't.  And check out the links on the left for how to recycle them (they contain mercury).

2. Elect renewable energy on your electric bill. Use the NJ Clean Power Choice Program to choose a renewable electric provider.

3.  Offset your carbon usage.  Pay a yearly amount to an organization that will invest it in reducing the carbon load in the atmosphere.  I use carbonfund.org, but you have many choices.
